Overview

Situated in the historic Yushima/Ochanomizu district of Tokyo—the traditional heart of Japanese academia—Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) has long stood as Japan's undisputed apex for clinical sciences. Tracing its roots back to 1928 as the nation's first national school of dentistry, TMDU has consistently ranked among the absolute best in the world for dental studies and biomedical research. Historic Merger Update: In a monumental shift for global higher education, TMDU officially merged with the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Tokyo Tech) on October 1, 2024, to form the Institute of Science Tokyo (Science Tokyo). This massive fusion unites TMDU's elite clinical prowess with Tokyo Tech's advanced engineering capabilities. The newly integrated university is uniquely designed to pioneer "medical-dental-engineering" cross-disciplinary research, creating an unprecedented academic engine right in the heart of Tokyo.

Career and Post-Grad Placement: Graduates of the medical and dental schools enter Japan's healthcare system at the absolute highest echelons. They are heavily recruited by elite national hospitals, government health ministries, and global pharmaceutical giants. With the transition into Science Tokyo, graduates now have unparalleled access to Japan's booming biotech and biomedical engineering startups.

● Professor Quality: Students are instructed by the clinical pioneers of modern dentistry, elite surgeons, and leading researchers in regenerative medicine, immunology, and genetics.

● Study Environment: The Yushima campus is deeply integrated into central Tokyo, cultivating an intensely rigorous and highly clinical atmosphere. Because it operates alongside a world-class university hospital, the student body is fiercely focused. However, the new merger with Tokyo Tech promises to inject a broader, highly interdisciplinary tech culture into the traditional medical campus.

The most popular and brutally competitive programs remain Dentistry, Clinical Medicine, Health Care Sciences, and Oral Health Engineering. Historically, TMDU’s Faculty of Dentistry holds a legendary status globally. While standard undergraduate medical and dental degrees require near-native fluency in Japanese to deal with real patients, the new Institute of Science Tokyo is aggressively expanding its English-taught graduate research programs—especially in fields like biomedical engineering and global health.

Navigating Admissions: The International Student Pathway

Entering TMDU (now operating as the medical and dental faculties of Science Tokyo) as an international undergraduate is exceptionally stringent, heavily driven by the strict licensure requirements for practicing medicine in Japan.

The step-by-step admission process requires:

1. Eligibility & Preparation: International applicants must have completed a standard 12-year education curriculum outside of Japan.

2. Language Competence: For undergraduate medical and dental degrees, absolute fluency in Japanese is mandatory. Applicants must take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU), scoring exceptionally high in Japanese as a Foreign Language, Science (Chemistry, Biology/Physics), and Mathematics.

3. English Proficiency: Even for Japanese-taught clinical tracks, a strong TOEFL iBT or IELTS score is strictly required to handle global medical literature.

4. University-Specific Examinations: Candidates who clear the EJU screening must travel to Tokyo to sit for the university's rigorous internal entrance exams. These include advanced science papers and highly weighted clinical/character interviews conducted entirely in Japanese.

5. Graduate Admissions: The pathway is vastly more accessible for international Master’s and Ph.D. students. The graduate schools (particularly the Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences) offer robust English-taught tracks and evaluate candidates primarily through research proposals, academic transcripts, and mandatory prior consultations with prospective supervising professors.

Financial Architecture:

Budget Split (In JPY)

(This is an average data, the actual budget may vary from person to person)

Fees and Annual Budget:

Fees and Annual Budget: Because it operates as a Japanese national university, the financial ROI at TMDU is absolutely staggering. Despite offering elite, world-class medical training, tuition is legally capped at the standard national fee structure. For incoming academic cohorts, annual tuition is generally set at ¥635,400. This represents a fraction of the astronomical debt associated with medical and dental schools in the US, UK, or Australia. Beyond tuition, an international student living in central Tokyo should prepare for an estimated annual living budget of roughly ¥1.5 million to ¥2.2 million.

This covers:

● Accommodation: ~¥60,000 to ¥100,000/month (The university offers limited, highly subsidized international student housing, but many upperclassmen secure private apartments in Bunkyo or neighboring districts).

● Food / Board: ~¥40,000 to ¥60,000/month.

● National Health Insurance (NHI) & Utilities: ~¥15,000 to ¥20,000/month.

Funding the Future:

Scholarship Opportunities: The Japanese government provides highly aggressive funding pipelines to attract global talent into its national medical institutions.

● MEXT Scholarship (Japanese Government): The premier national award. A full MEXT scholarship covers 100% of the tuition, provides a one-way flight to Japan, and issues a monthly living stipend (ranging from ¥117,000 to over ¥145,000 depending on the degree level) for international students.

● JASSO Honors Scholarship: A widely accessible grant providing a monthly stipend of ¥48,000 for high-achieving, privately funded international students.

● Tuition Exemption Programs: The newly formed Science Tokyo offers extensive tuition exemption frameworks. Outstanding students facing financial difficulties can apply to have 50% to 100% of their annual enrollment and tuition fees legally waived.
