Situated in the bustling Da'an District of Taipei, National Taiwan University (NTU) stands as the absolute premier and most prestigious comprehensive university in Taiwan. Founded in 1928, its iconic, palm-tree-lined main campus blends historic Japanese-era architecture with hyper-modern, cutting-edge research laboratories. NTU spans an astonishing footprint; when including its experimental forests and highland farms across the island, the university manages roughly 34,000 hectares (accounting for nearly 1% of Taiwan's total landmass). Operating as the intellectual engine of Taiwan's global dominance in semiconductors and applied technology, NTU hosts a massive academic population of over 32,000+ students. It draws elite international talent eager to engage with one of the most vibrant democracies and high-tech economies in Asia.

The most popular and brutally competitive undergraduate programs include Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Business Administration, Clinical Medicine, and Law. While many core undergraduate degrees are taught in traditional Mandarin, NTU is aggressively expanding its English-taught degree tracks (especially within the International College and engineering faculties) to cater to its growing international student body

Navigating Admissions: The International Student Pathway

The gateway for international students to enter NTU is highly competitive, focusing on students who demonstrate strong academic foundations and clear cross-cultural adaptability.

The step-by-step admission process requires:

1. Eligibility & Preparation: Applicants must hold foreign nationality (without holding household registration in Taiwan) and apply directly through the NTU Office of International Affairs (OIA) online portal. Students can typically select up to five program choices.

2. Academic Excellence: Undergraduates need strong academic credentials across global high school systems. Admitted students typically present highly competitive scores (e.g., strong IB Diploma results, excellent A-Level grades, or top percentiles in standard international tracks).

3. Language Competence: This is a critical factor at NTU.

○ For Chinese-taught programs, a minimum TOCFL (Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language) Level 3 or HSK Level 5 is strictly required.

○ For English-taught programs, international students must demonstrate proficiency with a minimum IELTS Academic score of 6.0, or a TOEFL iBT score of 71+ (though highly competitive programs often demand much higher scores).

4. Documentation & Interviews: Applications require official high school transcripts, passport copies, financial guarantee statements, and letters of recommendation. Certain highly competitive programs may require virtual interviews to assess communication skills and program fit.

Financial Architecture:

Budget Split (In TWD)

(This is an average data, the actual budget may vary from person to person)

Fees and Annual Budget:

Fees and Annual Budget: NTU offers an absolutely staggering financial ROI. Because the Taiwanese government heavily subsidizes higher education, students access a Top 60 global university at a fraction of the cost of Western institutions. For the upcoming academic cohorts, the standard undergraduate tuition for international students generally ranges from 100,000 to 280,000 TWD  per year, depending on whether the student is studying humanities or heavily lab-based engineering/medical sciences. Beyond tuition, an international student living in Taipei should prepare for an estimated annual living budget of roughly 180,000 to 300,000 TWD.

This covers:

● On-Campus Accommodation: ~20,000 to 45,000 TWD/year (NTU provides highly subsidized international student dormitories, though spaces are highly competitive).

● Food / Board: ~80,000 to 120,000 TWD/year (Dining on campus and at local night markets is notoriously affordable and world-class).

● Student Fees, Books, & National Health Insurance (NHI): ~20,000 TWD/year.

Funding the Future:

Scholarship Opportunities: The financial aid landscape in Taiwan is incredibly generous, designed explicitly to attract top global talent to the island.

● Taiwan Scholarship (MOE): Funded by the Ministry of Education, this is a highly coveted award for international students. It provides a massive tuition waiver (up to 40,000 TWD per semester) plus a monthly living stipend of 15,000 TWD for undergraduates.

● NTU International Student Scholarship: The university automatically considers outstanding international applicants for internal merit scholarships, which often include full or partial tuition waivers alongside generous monthly living allowances.

● College/Departmental Scholarships: Many specific faculties (especially Engineering and Business) offer their own targeted funding for elite international applicants to encourage global diversity within their cohorts.
